Futuristic VW XL1 cruises the streets of New York City

vw xl1New Yorkers will be able to get a glimpse of the futuristic and highly efficient Volkswagen XL1 for the next week.  The VW XL1 arrived in New York City as part of a month-long American tour that has gone from Los Angeles to Washington D.C., and now has hit the New York City aka the Big Apple.

The XL1, which looks like it came straight from a sci-fi movie, is the most fuel-efficient production car in the world.  (At least that is Volkswagen's claim.)  The plug-in hybrid 2 seater gets 261 mpg and can go 31 miles on full electric power if you choose.

Volkswagen engineers mated an incredibly efficient, diesel-electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain with a lightweight carbonfiber structure.  The futuristic car weighs just 1753 pounds and uses a 48-horsepower two-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection TDI Clean Diesel engine which is paired to a 27-horsepower electric motor and a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, and a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery.  In addition the XL1 has aerodynamics that would make a race car jealous with a coefficient of drag of just 0.189.  This means the VW XL1 can travel at speeds around 62 mph while using just 8.3 horsepower. In all-electric mode, the XL1 requires less than 0.1 kWh to cover more than 0.6 miles (one kilometer because they use that in Europe).

What's the top speed?  Ok, well now speed demons will be buying since it has a top speed of 99 mph and goes from 0 to 62 mph in 12.7 seconds.  That's probably fine for 90%+ of US city driving though.

Want to buy one?  Well you can see the Volkswagne XL1 cruising the streets of New York City not that many will be built.  Just 250 XL1s will be built at the Volkswagen factory in Osnabrück, Germany.   They VW XL1 is going to sell for roughly $145,000 per car.  Expensive?  Yes, but it's totally worth it so you can brag to your friends you are getting 261 mpg.

VW Teaser Video “Sunny Side” with Youtube Stars

This is another Super Bowl 2013 VW Commercial, well teaser video, which I think it really is funny.  It shows a bunch of Youtube Stars (if that's what you call them) having freakouts over something.

At the end of the video all the Youtube Stars are getting together and trying to “Get Happy” with Jimmy Cliff.  Some of the videos I had never seen of heard of but it still was funny.

The best part of the teaser video is that you don't realize it's and ad for VW until the end.  I found in entertaining, distracting, and memorable.  Three components in my opinion of a what a great commercial and particularly Super Bowl 2013 commercial should be.

Btw… if anyone from VW is reading this did you know I have two Singing Dogs?  I think they would be great in a Super Bowl commercial.  🙂

Is This “Get In. Get Happy.” VW Beetle Commercial Racist?

One of the most talk about Super Bowl 2013 commercials is this Volkswagen (VW) Beetle “Get In. Get Happy” commercial.  The media and bloggers across the internet have apparently tagged it as ‘Racist' since it shows a white guy (a really white guy) in an normal looking American office talking in a Jamaican accent.

Personally I am not sure what the issue is since the song playing in the background is from reggae artist Jimmy Cliff.  I am pretty certain if he didn't like the commercial he would not have agreed to be in the VW commercial.  (Of course I am sure VW paid him quite a bit of money.)  Also VW tested the commercial with Jamaicans who didn't find it particularly offensive or racist.

I will ask my readers straight up, is this VW Beetle commercial racist?  Watch it below and let me know!

I don't think it is racist but that is just my opinion.  Besides something you need to realize is that VW probably doesn't mind the controversy and hype surrounding the commercial.  Why?  Since I assume a lot more people will see it. The job of ad people is to get people talking about commercials and that is exactly what was accomplished with this VW Beetle commercial.  It already has around 5.8 million views which I am sure VW execs are happy with.
