Italian Government selling BMWs, Jaguars, Alfa Romeos, Maseratis on eBay

What do you do if you are the Italian Government and need money… fast?  Apparently sell your collection of state owned Maseratis, BMWs, Jaguars, Alfa Romeos, and Lancias on eBay.

According to a story in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica about 1,500 Italian goverment owned cars will be auctioned off.  Bidding on these eBay auctions ends on April 16th and it seems bidding has been quite brisk.  It seems that the starting prices were set low in order to fuel bidding.  You can view all eBay auctions here.

Currently there are BMW 5-series, Alfa Romeo 166's, and Lancia Thesis are up for auction as well.  A Thesis seems a bit of an odd car for the Italian government to own but it is an Italian marque.  In addition from what I can tell most of these cars are diesels.

They will also be auctioning off a Maserati that was used by the Defense Ministry and a few Jaguars.  Most of these cars were used to transport government officials to and from meetings and events.  Since the cost to maintain all these cars is quite high that alone should save the government quite a lot in maintenance costs in addition to the money raised through selling the cars.

These eBay car auctions are being pushed by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in an effort to show that government officials can actually walk instead of drive.  Or Matteo Renzi knows this is a great publicity stunt for Italy.  What do you think?

At least this confirms that everyone uses eBay to generate extra cash for unwanted goods nowadays.  Not just little people.
